Efrat Kedem

born in Israel, 1980
lives and works in New York

The starting point of Efrat Kedem, one of the local champions of readymade, can be imagined as insatiable amazement about the various and sundry objects that are superfluous and fallacious, and fill our world. One day, while "intuitively surfing" Amazon.com, she typed in the word "gold" and encountered a sign: "We buy gold." This gave her the idea of purchasing objects on the site that appear after entering certain words: "black shape," "time," "view," "magic," "something long," "good idea."

These are abstract concepts, but the online logic knows how to translate them into commodities. The grill cover, which seems to be standing in air, is incredibly similar to Duchamp's empty typewriter cover. The knitting needle is reminiscent of Duchamp's Comb from 1916 and even Trap, which is placed on the floor. Ready and common objects are the raw materials of Efrat Kedem, and the artistic act in this case is an act of purchasing - money in exchange for an object, which is selected on an online shopping site. Nonetheless, it is amusing to think about the technique of typing as a handicraft of the 2013 era.
