Larry Abramson

Born in South Africa, 1954; lives and works in Tel Aviv

Larry Abramson's "Nevo" paintings from 1984 were among the first to take a critical, post-modern stand regarding the romantic idea of "the sublime": That is, the metaphysical self-realization of man based on the experience of the infinite in nature. Taking the panoramic perspective of Moses, who realized the fact of his own imminent death when facing the unattainable place, Abramson deals a blow to the romantic promise of the birth of a superior human being from the encounter with infinite nature. We are all subject to Moses' fate, says Abramson in his paintings – even those who live in the Promised Land.
