Orit Hofshi creates huge woodcuts depicting distant, neo-romantic landscapes. In her works, the forces of nature and of destruction mingle and mix. The powers of "the sublime" encounter a catastrophe of both nature and culture. Realism and expressionism merge, creating a landscape that threatening and disquieting rather than pastoral. According to the artist, "I try to put man in his place, where he can see himself and place himself with respect to the rest of the world. Only a position of humility allows man to observe and understand his place in the world and his relation to others. My works try to suggest the place where power and domination are no longer effective. They offer a place that is unknown and unresolved, where aggression doesn't work."
