Maayan uses a series of Formica tables of the kind prevalent in Israel during his childhood as a platform for the display of porcelain dishes laden with local Ashkenazi specialties. The dishes seem to have been severed from their concrete, original context and to represent a distant memory, undergoing a series of changes that blur their distinct character, form, and allure. This artistic strategy expropriates the food from its functional, nourishing context, transforming it into a strange, threatening presence.
